Main Story The Final Countdown

Understanding the Basics
Chess.FM coverage of U.S Champs
The 2009 US Championship at the ritzy Chess Club and Scholastic Centre of Saint Louis is heading for the final countdown of the last two rounds at the weekend - and with a four-way tie at the top.

Impressive wins by the "Big Three" of Alexander Onischuk over defending champion Yury Shulman, Hikaru Nakamura over Varuzhan Akobian, Gata Kamsky over Joel Benjamin, and 17-year-old Robert Hess over Josh Friedel in round 7 put the four victors at the top of the leader board on 5/7 going into the home stretch.

ICC Chess.FM has had unrivaled move-by-move commentary direct from the official playing site in St. Louis by the onsite commentary team of WGM Jennifer Shahade and GM Emil Sutovsky. We've also seen and heard some remarkable post mortems from the players themselves; there's the ESPN-styled round-by-round wrap-up videos at the end of the day from Jennifer Shahade and Macauley Peterson; and also former US champion Nick De Firmian (see table below) is in on the act by bringing to you his GOTD for each round from the championship.

Join us for the action here at ICC Chess.FM as it happens, when it happens this weekend to see who wins the title. Saturday's 8th round begins three hours earlier, at 12pm EDT. Sunday's final round begins at 11am EDT - dare you miss it at ICC Chess.FM?

My 60 Memorable Games - Bobby Fischer

ICC StoreA rare window into the mind of a chess icon, My 60 Memorable Games is perhaps the most inspirational and influential chess book ever written. First published in 1969, it contains Bobby Fischer's objective, honest and self-critical annotations to games he had won, drawn and even lost in the period from 1957 to 1967 - but from which he had also learned valuable lessons.

Bobby Fischer Rediscovered - Andy Soltis

ICC StoreAlthough 30 years have passed since Bobby Fischer single-handedly wrested the world chess title from the former Soviet Union, admiration for his beautiful play remains as strong as ever. As copies of My 60 Memorable Games by Fischer are elusive and the book only covers material up to 1967 in any case, the author has provided a timely volume that retraces Bobby's chess career from his teenage years in New York right up to his final matches with Boris Spassky, taking a fresh look at the chessboard masterpieces that have made him a living chess legend.

American Grandmaster: Four Decades of Chess Adventures - Joel Benjamin

ICC Store
Joel Benjamin is one of the most prominent faces in the history of US chess. At thirteen years of age he broke Bobby Fischer's record as the youngest ever national master, and this was followed by countless tournament successes. Perhaps most famously, in 1997 he hit the headlines when he became the chess consultant for IBM's Deep Blue computer, which made history by beating World Champion Garry Kasparov in an epic encounter.
