- How many times have you been to USATE?
2009 was my fifteenth year competing in the USATE.
- Best individual result? Team result?
Individually, 5.5/6 in 2002. In 2005, I was Board 3 on the championship team “My 60 Memorable... Rants” with Eli Vovsha, Samson Benen, and Josh Bromberg. I liked our ironic name, although in retrospect it was probably the reason why we were deprived of the Chess Life cover that year.
- True or false: chess is primarily a social activity.
Regretfully true, because I love chess but I’m a total misanthrope.
- Name a skill that benefits you only in chess but not in life.
My rugged good looks.
- What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you during a tournament?
There are many equally hilarious and traumatic answers to this question. One that is particularly memorable involves a pony named “Sprinkles.”
- Do you have a catchphrase or motto?
“Give a man a fish, and feed him for a day. Turn a man into a fish, and watch him swim to freedom.”
- Where do you hope to be in five years?
In Los Angeles, at the premiere of “High School Musical 8: Postdoctoral Dance-A-Thon” with my wife and lead actress, Miley Cyrus.
- What is the best way to bounce back from a loss?
A spiced pear & clove scented candle, The Carpenters Greatest Hits, and a good cry.
- What is the meaning of life?
I comfortably rely on this Kurt Vonnegut quote: “A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved.” I make a terrible misanthrope. ♦
