Main Story Svidler On The Luft

Win More Games A new year brought with it a new tournament on the international calendar, as the Aker Chess Challenge (the main event of the Gjovik International Festival) ran January 2-5 in Gjovik, Norway.

The four superstars in action for this inaugural event included: Local hero Magnus Carlsen, five-time Russian champion Peter Svidler, American ace Hikaru Nakamura, and Kjetil Lie of Norway.

Not unsurprisingly, the tournament ended in a three-way tie on 4/6 between the top three Carlsen, Svidler and Nakamura, with the American losing out in the blitz playoff for the final, though he did have the conciliation of bronze by easily beating Lie.

But the final didn't exactly go to script for the enthusiastic Norwegians, as Svidler beat home favourite Carlsen, 1.5-0.5, after the latter erred badly in the decisive second game.

Chess.FM's Macauley Peterson was in Gjovik to cover the event for ICC - and you don't want to miss any of his 4 video reports on all the action including interviews with the players that can be found now at the Chess.FM Blog.

Each Thursday here on ICC Chess.FM, in Boris Alterman's Gambit Guide, Boris investigates gambits old and new and show that, while some may not be actively played on the grandmaster circuit these days, they are all exciting to play and at the same time instructive as they teach us all about natural development of the pieces and tactics in chess.

Checkout GM Boris Alterman's official blog where, among other things, he'll be discussing some of his choices for his popular Gambit Guide series. Israeli GM Boris Alterman is best known as a leading chess advisor for the multi-title winning chess software program (Deep) Junior, where he specialized in developing its opening book.
