Win More Games A Corus of Online Approval!

Win More Games

In a unique partnership with the Corus Chess Tournament, one of the world's most famous chess festivals, Internet Chess Club (ICC) will be hosting a special satellite qualifier for one of the final spots in the 2009 'C' Group.

16 invited players, selected by Corus in consultation with ICC, will fight it out in an online rapid knockout tournament, held on the weekends of November 1st & 2nd, and 8th & 9th (starting at 10:00am Eastern Time each day), with the winner receiving the Corus 'C' Group invite, a round-trip ticket to Wijk aan Zee, Hotel & Breakfast plus $1,300 (1,000 Euro).

And its a true international line-up, with the 16 players spanning the globe and different time zones. From the USA through Canada to Brazil, Cuba and Venezuela, and from Scotland, England, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Azerbaijan and Russia, to even far away Australia all coming together as one over the internet. And to ensure fair-play for all, at each location and for each match, an independent "proctor" will be in place to oversee the proceedings, many of whom being national chess officials, international arbiters, national arbiters and ICC administrators.

Win More Games Vishy Anand - World Champion #15!

World Championship Preview

World Championship Winner

Congratulations to VIshy Anand of India, who with a draw in game 11 against Russian challenger Vladimir Kramnik, won the match 6.5-4.5 to be crowned the undisputed world champion!

Needing to win in a do-or-die situation for Kramnik in game 11, the Russian tried his best to complicate things from the off with a wild main-line Sicilian Najdorf, but Anand was more than a match as he neutralized all the potential dangers to emerge from the complications with an edge, as the game ended in a 24 move draw.

After all the schisms of recent years of rivaling world titles with various different formats from KO to tournament-style events, Anand has emerged as the best and can safely be regarded as World Champion #15 in a heritage line that stretches back to Wilhelm Steinitz in 1886.

Mondays: GM Ronen Har-Zvi's "Unusual Queen Pawn Openings"

Ronen - Unusual Queen Pawn Openings

In his “New Ideas in....” regular video series for ICC Chess.FM, GM Ronen Har-Zvi investigates the latest developments and trends in those downright annoying and unusual Queen Pawn openings that avoid the main battle-lines with 2 c4.

Are you searching for a quick-fix against the Colle-Zukertort, Torre Attack, London System, QB Attack with 2 Bg5, Stonewall Attack or perhaps the King's Fianchetto Attack with 1 d4 2 Nf3 3 g3 (without c4)? Then look no further as Ronen gives you an easy-to-play antidote to all those annoying 1 d4 openings.

This week (Tue., Oct 28), returning to join John in the hot seat is former world championship challenger, GM Nigel Short MBE.

In 1979 at 19, Nigel was the world’s youngest grandmaster of the game. In 1993 in London, after defeating Boris Gelfand, Jon Speelman, Jan Timman and Anatoly Karpov in Candidates Matches, Short unsuccessfully challenged Garry Kasparov for the World Championship title.

Along with his playing activities, Short is regarded as a witty, yet often controversial columnist on the game, notably for two of the UK’s leading broadsheets, The Sunday Telegraph and The Guardian.

Nigel has gone on to coach young prodigies like Pentala Harikrishna, Sergey Karjakin, David Howell and Parimarjan Negi. In 1999 the Queen of Gt. Britain awarded him the honor of Member of the British Empire (MBE), in recognition of his chess accomplishments. Nigel also recently won the Commonwealth Championship for the third time.

Starting Out: c3 Sicilian - John Emms

ICC Store The c3 Sicilian is a logical and sensible way of meeting Black's most popular defence to 1 e4. With his second move White sets about constructing a strong pawn centre and cleverly sidesteps the labyrinth of opening theory associated with open Sicilians. Positions that are reached can be either tactical or positional in nature, and the c3 Sicilian particularly appeals to players who enjoy open positions with active piece play and clear objectives for both sides.

In this book, c3 Sicilian expert John Emms goes back to basics: he explains in depth the reasoning behind the critical early moves - something that is often neglected - and uses instructive games to demonstrate key plans for both White and Black.

My 60 Memorable Games - Bobby Fischer

ICC Store A rare window into the mind of a chess icon, My 60 Memorable Games is perhaps the most inspirational and influential chess book ever written.

First published in 1969, it contains Bobby Fischer's objective, honest and self-critical annotations to games he had won, drawn and even lost in the period from 1957 to 1967 but from which he had also learned valuable lessons.

In contrast with the previous edition of this book, no alterations have been made to the text other than the conversion of moves into algebraic notation, making this an updated yet accurate reflection of the original book.

Starting Out: d-pawn attacks - Palliser

ICC Store Are you looking to attack with 1 d4? Then look no further...

In this book Richard Palliser provides in-depth coverage of three of the most dangerous attacking set-ups available to White: the Colle-Zukertort, the Barry, and the 150 attacks.

In recent years these three opening weapons have considerably gained in popularity, especially at club level, and it's easy to see why. They are fun to learn, and easy to play; they take Black away from the comfort zone of established theory; and they can all lead to devastating mating attacks against the black king.

What more can you ask from an opening? Whether you are playing the White or Black side, this book tells all you need to know.

How Chess Games are Won and Lost - Lars Bo Hansen

ICC Store In this important work, Lars Bo Hansen, grandmaster and professional educator, presents chess as a game of five phases, and explains the do's and don'ts in each: the opening, the transition to the early middlegame, the middlegame, strategic endgames, and technical endgames.

With a wealth of examples from both his own practice and that of his colleagues, Hansen discusses the typical mistakes and pitfalls, and shows how to handle the subtleties unique to each stage. He also advises on how to work on your chess in each aspect of the game. Of special value is his explanation of how to study typical middlegames, and that middlegame preparation - a neglected area for most players - is both possible and necessary.
