AeroSvit - 2008
Currently underway just now in Foros, Ukraine, is the Aerosvit-2008 elite tournament featuring twelve of the world's top grandmasters (average rating 2711) vying for the title.
The line-up (in rating order) includes: Carlsen,
Magnus (NOR, 2765); Svidler,
Peter (RUS,
2746); Ivanchuk,
Vassily
(UKR, 2740); Shirov,
Alexei
(ESP 2740); Karjakin,
Sergey (UKR,2732); Jakovenko,
Dmitry
(RUS, 2711); Alekseev,
Evgeny (RUS, 2711); Eljanov,
Pavel
(UKR, 2687) Volokitin,
Andrei (UKR, 2684); Nisipeanu,
Liviu-Dieter
(ROU, 2684); Van
Wely, Loek
(NED, 2676); Onischuk,
Alexander (USA, 2664)
Norwegian
wunderkind Magnus Carlsen, 17, continues to wreck havoc though at
another elite event as he beat Alexei Shirov in round 5 for a fourth
win so far in the tournament, as he extends his lead to 1.5-points at
the top on 4.5/5.
Carlsen’s
tournament performance rating continues to hit new stratospheric
heights as it now nears 3100(!). His +4 score also means a
big boost for his Elo rating that could well make the teenager the de
facto new world No.1 before the end of the tournament!
Will
he do it? You can find out here at WCL by following Carlsen's
progress with live coverage of the games from Aerosvit, starting at
08:00 EDT (15:00 local). Each day, Chess.FM also provides WCL
members with a Game of the Day (GOTD) video of the
best game of each round for you to tune-in to, with expert analysis
from site pros GM Joel Benjamin, GM Larry Christiansen and GM Ronen
Har-Zvi (see below).

En Passant: GM Karen Asrian, 1980-2008

One
of Armenia’s leading grandmasters and reigning national
champion, Karen Asrian, the linchpin of his
country’s gold medal-winning Olympiad team at Turin in 2006,
died suddenly of a suspected heart attack last week, aged 28.
Asrian,
a three-time Armenian champion (1999, 2007 and 2008), and ranked number
92 in the world, took ill in his car while driving to the capital city
Yerevan, where he was scheduled to act as a guest commentator for the
opening day’s play at the Yerevan Giants, a new elite rapid
tournament taking place there.
The
tragic news of Asrian’s untimely death at such a young age
overshadowed what was supposed to be a gala opening at the national
Opera House for the Yerevan Giants. Play was suspended for two days
with the tournament reduced in rounds and renamed "the Karen
Asrian Memorial" in his honor.

Questions and some answers:
- Too many channels!
You are in the Lobby (channel 250) but you want to see what is happening in
the channel where you just joined a tourney, and, of course, you don't
want to miss the announcements in Main and... well you don't want
to
miss a thing! So you can choose to switch from tab to tab OR, in
the Settings, uncheck Channel Tabs. Then all the messages will appear in a
single window in different colors, including the number of the channel they
come from, such as:
username{223}:
when does the wild tourney start?
However, each time you want
to send a message in a channel, it must be in the form /tell 250 <your
text> to send it in 250, or /tell 1 <my question
is> if you want to ask something in newbie/live
channel. By the way, there is a shortcut: if you type ', <my text>'
your message will be sent in the channel you just used.
- Games
of the Day / Videos
: they are available for members only (so
join us !)
with your WCL handle and password. Don't miss the new "GM Ronen Har-Zvi : Petroff Defense".
- The Petroff Defense (sometimes
called the Russian Defense, and named after Russia's Alexander Petrov
(1794-1867) is considered as one of Black’s most reliable and
solid methods of meeting the King’s Pawn opening. It is easy
to play and an excellent choice for someone looking for an alternative
to the Scotch Opening, the Italian Game and the ‘Spanish
torture’ of the Ruy Lopez. Until a few years ago, the Petroff
was an opening that was favored by only a few top Grandmasters,
including Anatoly Karpov and Artur Yusupov. However, the last few years
have seen a dramatic rise in its popularity, and it now provides
battlefields for many top clashes of the modern elite players,
including Anand, Kramnik, Leko, Topalov, and Shirov. And in
the latest of his "New Ideas in..." series, GM Ronen Har-Zvi, takes a
closer look under the microscope at the solid
Petroff
