Dos
Hermanas - Right Here, Right Now! Part II
Starting
today, and for the ninth consecutive year, ICC is hosting
the annual Internet Chess Tournament "Ciudad de
Dos Hermanas" 2008.
The 9th Internet Chess Tournament "Ciudad
de Dos Hermanas" continues to break all records here
on ICC! We had a 10% increase on last year's figures with
a total of 5455 players participating in the 12 qualifiers.
Not only that, but in qualifier 5, we smashed the all-time
Dos Hermanas attendance record (553, set in 2004) at a staggering
583!
Those
near week-long 12 qualifiers soon whittled the field down
though to the final 32 (12 winners and 20 top finishers)
who will battle it out for the $13,000 (approx. 7,700 Euro)
main prize fund, with the knockout finals held 4-5 April
here again at ICC (www.chessclub.com)
starting at 3:00 pm EDT.
From 32, we're now down to final eight for Saturday's final,
and the cosmopolitan field includes: GM Hikaru Nakamura
(USA), GM Zaven Andriasyan (Armenia), GM Ronen Har-Zvi (Israel),
GM Yaroslav Zinchenko (Ukraine), GM Baadur Jobava (Georgia),
GM Dmitry Konoenko (Ukraine), GM Michele Godena (Italy),
and last year's defending champion, Jorge Sammour-Hasbun
(Palestine), again the only untitled player in the final!
You can get your ringside seat for
the eight-player shoot-out final here on ICC on Saturday,
April 5, starting at 3:00pm EDT. You can also follow the
results and download the games from all the qualifiers and
finals at our dedicated Dos
Hermanas result and info page.

GM Ronen Har-Zvi "New Ideas
in the Marshall Attack"
 |
One of the worlds first Grandmasters
of chess, Americas Frank J. Marshall (1877-1944),
left behind a lasting legacy to the chess world with
his revered gambit against the Ruy Lopez the
Marshall Attack with 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4
Ba4 Nf6 5 0-0 Be7 6 Re1 b5 7 Bb3 0-0 8 c3 d5!
The Marshall Attack is one of the
most important openings in the history of chess and
is still deployed with regularity at super Grandmaster
level. In current theory the ideas and strategies
of both approaches are studied in-depth, and nowadays
experts have come to the conclusion that White has
no clear superiority in the main theoretical lines.
And in the latest of his "New Ideas in..."
series, GM Ronen Har-Zvi, takes a closer look under
the microscope at Marshall's revolutionary idea.

Starting Out: Sicilian Grand Prix Attack - Gawain
Jones
he
Grand Prix Attack is one of White's most aggressive
ways of fighting the Sicilian. It leads to a sharp,
complex battle in which White often launches a direct
attack against the black king. The opening has become
a powerful weapon in the cut and thrust of tournament
chess, where victory is everything and draws are not
enough. It has even gained the seal of approval from
elite players such as Vishy Anand and Nigel Short,
who have both utilized it with success.
In this book Gawain Jones, one
of the world' leading experts on the Grand Prix Attack,
provides everything you need to know about this opening.
Using illustrative games and drawing upon his own
wealth of experience, he introduces the key moves
and ideas for both sides, taking care to explain the
reasoning behind them - something that has often been
neglected or taken for granted.
