icon  Handshake ! !

World Chess Live!  We would just like to shake hand to the new members who join WCL each day and... mhhh... ? Not that handshake topic? You mean the ridiculous dispute between two kids ? the first one who refuses to salute his opponent and the other who takes advantage of that to claim the win? Well, we know for a long time that wisdom doesn't go along with rating (as an evidence, take a look at my low rating ;-)). But, for those who want more detail on this non-event, you can find some video there.
Great players but poor men, in the "My great predecessors" series, would come Alekhin whose sympathy for alcohol and mustached german dictator was well known, even Philidor who emigrated to London during the french Revolution and whom opinion was unclear and, of course, Robert J. Fischer who had unacceptable and unforgivable behaviours after he becomes THE Hero who defeated Soviet supremacy in Chess. "Chess is Life" but life is not only chess... That is what we want to prove thanks to WCL, making of the site a friendly and familial place where Chess is a game, a wonderful game, may be an art, but also a medium to mix cultures, ages and where people play for fun, not only for their rating.
So, "You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'not the only one" (John Lennon) and that's why WCL is growing! What about WCL standing for Wisdom and Chess are Life? I you think so, "one day, you'll join us"!

If you want to see your name in the NewsLetter, it is VERY easy : just play the Events and win!

Played this week

Some results of the week

Keep an on the scheduled Events, connect in time, then, jump in!
On Dasher, click in menu bar - Window - Activities then select the Events tab. That is where you find most of the info about... guess what... EVENTS ! Under (To)day Events, you find scheduled events, MasterChallenge, Simul, etc. But also the live games that are broadcasted. Under them are the "tomorrow events" as far there is no last minute change. But above the Today Events, there is a line name "scheduled events with titled players this week" and it opens a webpage.

vs is becoming the usual time control for Master Challenge but, for people over 2000, the time control is 1 0 1 0.
So, for players who have a provisional rating in bullet, MasterChallenge will take in consideration their rating average in other sections.
Masters have more fun to play that way and chances for players to win are greater so... everybody is happy !
Let's see the results of the week:

Thursday, january 17th | 15:00 EST
UA WGM Anna Zatonskih played 21 games 2 0 1 0, 20 wins and 1 loss to MaryDawson

Friday january 18th | 19:00 EST
US GM Vitali Golod played in Time-Odds too, 18 wins and 3 draws to Darrellmac2, IronanTH and VAIBHAVBHAT

Saturday january 19th | 15:00 EST
YU GM Viktor Gavrikov played a mouse-odds MasterChallenge. That's not a new wild game but GM Viktor Gavrikov encountered some problem with his mouse during the Time-Odds MasterChallenge. Of course the winners deserved their win and the GM didnt seek an excuse but just gives an explanation. Usually, Viktor Gavrikov's score is much more better but this day was a day off, so here come the winnersssss of the 17 games played: BRock x 3, Stilidimitrov, kratz, olegkorolev, Lena, jimjom and Alieth.

Sunday, january 20th | 14:00 EST
IL IM Branimir Maksimovic played 21 games, losing to Alieth x 2 and lion321.

Monday, january 21st | 19:00 EST
IL IM Branimir Maksimovic got no rest day and battled hard in an other MasterChallenge. 20 Games with 3 draws to TGrun, BRock and VAIBHAVBHAT and 3 losses to Alieth and XPShadow and Superpanda.

Tuesday, january 22nd | 15:00 EST
IL GM Vitali Golod played a tough Pieces-Odds MasterChallenge of 18 games; losing twice to Lena.
In Pieces odds, the master will suffer the handicap of a piece determined by your blitz rating despite the rating displayed is your wild rating. The time control is 2 0 2 0. The limits can be adjusted and are not always the same, even for the same Master. For example:
 U1200 Queen down
U1400 Rook on a file missing
U1650 Bishop on c file missing
U1850 kNight on b file missing
 U2200 f pawn missing
Else... well... show us you deserve your rating ;-)

Wednesday, January 23rd | 15:00 EST
US IM Sasha Belezky played 20 games and just lost to StiliDimitrov.

Thanks to all the players, Members and Masters, and Congratulations to the Winners.

Rules and descriptions of all Titled Events can be find here

White mate in 3 :

Banter played this week:

During the 25 5 game, the two Masters whisper their thoughts and their plans. Of course, they can't read what their opponent is planning. Always interesting to try to understand how a Master thinks!
When the game finishes, the players review the game together, exploring other lines and analyzing their mistakes.

IM Mio Perunovic vs IM Goran Vojinovic ½ - ½
GM Boris Gulko vs GM Ronen Har-Zvi ½ - ½
IM DStamenkovic vs IM MioPerunovic 1 - 0

These games have been recorded with the player's comments and can be rebroadcasted on demand.

 TGIF

This Friday evening, (jan. 18), we had an other great match!
IM Goran Vojinovic vs FM Dragan Drasko. The both Serbian players (even if Dragan Drasko lives now in Canada) faced in series of 3 0 bullet ending in a draw 5-5 after a full hour of excitment. Thanks to the players for that event regarded as a one of the most popular show between titled players on WCL.

 Simul Results

Don't miss the registration! To make sure you'll be warned of the beginning of the registration for the simul, just do "tell simulbot alarm". Beware, that is a toggle command, so, if you send the command twice, that will switch the alarm off.

Saturday, january 19th | 20:00 EST
EC IM Martha Fierro played as usual a Simul on Saturday evening at 20:00 EST. A not to be missed rendez-vous.
Twelve players joined in and the only thing she lost was her connexion. Resuming a simul after the Simulgiver is disconnected is a tough and long job. Please don't try to resume by yourself, just wait and see, be sure the event team is working on it and, even if your worries are understable, the tells just slow down the fix. So, after this problem, 2 players were MIA and WGM Martha Fierro won easily the 5 remaining games. As usual her audio analysis of the game she played against RobertBancod was smart and followed by a large audience (read the note below about broadcastbot).
For a preview of a game previously analysed! Click here:

US GM Ronen Har-Zvi played his weekly Simul. He won all his games and analysed, together with the player, one of the games
Here are few comments of GM Ronen Har-Zvi and Alieth about the game
{Game 149 (Alieth vs RonenHar-Zvi)game #1313718719}
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : hello everyone..
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : I usually play the Sicilian , but lately I have been playing the Scandinavian in on-line quick chess
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : as I think it is quite solid
...
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : I am not sure about 0-0
Alieth kibitz : i thought surely i was better after it
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : yes!
...
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : here I simply think white is just better!
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : maybe way better!
...
Alieth kibitz : i so wanted this position
...
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : here, if I do not find something I am just losing
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : maybe still not good for black, but I complicated it.. and had chances
...
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : draw?
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : here sometimes not realising.. that draw is the correct play here
Alieth kibitz : was trying to not let my attack fade so gave exchange back but i missed Qa3
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : and trying too too hard.. led to ...
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : I think you really wanted to win.. and did not think about the risks
...
White resigns
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : so this was tiny bit about the Scandinavian.. and a lot about trying too much!!
RonenHar-Zvi(GM) kibitz : see you all next week... good game alieth!
Yes, good game Alieth,

US FM Dragan Drasko played a Simul with a post Audio analysis. All wins but one draw to kte5. Then, he picked up 2 games for a short and interesting review. BillBodhisattva's and nsideurheadbro's games were analysed.

Important Note To Follow the Audio: the voice of the Master is relayed by an encoder which occurs some lag, so, if you "follow MarthaFierro" you get the commentaries with about 15-20 sec delay. That is why you must "follow broadcastbot". That bot copies all the moves from the master's board with 20 sec delay, so you can follow the analysis with the commentaries matching the moves. The link to activate audio is in Event windows.

Events with Prize by IM Goran Vojinovic

During February and March 2008, IM Goran Vojinovic will offer a weekly MasterChallenge in the early afternoon, (european time). Among the players who will play him, one will be awarded by a free lesson given by IM Goran Vojinovic.
The Serbian International Master is actually rated 2474 and could beat his previous peak (2482) very soon.
He belongs to those who believe in WCL and wants to help the site to develop in Europ.
The dates are not yet determined, so keep an eye on WCL events and don't give away the chance to get free lesson from a great teacher!

Predict a Move

Started since January 1st, PAM (Predict-a-Move) is rolling. Every day at 13:00 EST, you can join the line just type "tell PAM-bot join".
The rule is simple. A game played by 2 masters is chosen in a database and the members have to guess what is the move that has been played by white as well as black. Any guess within the 30 first seconds give you 25 points. The right guess gives 75 points, so, the right guess found in less than 30 seconds means 100 points.
Of course, it is not allowed to search the game in a database in order to guess(?) the move. We hope you understand that cheating is just detrimental.
You can join, leave and come back without losing your points.
Here come the names of the top 3 in the PAM played from Thursday, January 17th to Wednesday, January 23th:

 Thursday  1. Alstone52 4000 pts  2. ChessLover2 3925 pts  3. timm 3775 pts
 Friday  1. timm 3650 pts  2. Nixen 3475 pts  3. Zoraidax 3400 pts
 Saturday  1. timm 4450 pts  2. Janos07 4025 pts  3. teve15 3725 pts
 Sunday  1. Alstone52 3400 pts  2. teve15 2775 pts  3. billscotty 2675 pts
 Monday  1. timm 3725 pts  2. Janos07 3525 pts  3. ZoranMilenkovic 3375 pts
 Tuesday  1. timm 3425 pts  2. Alstone52 3350 pts  3. teve15 3250 pts
 Wednesday  1. timm 4875 pts  2. teve15 4675 pts  3. Alstone52 4600 pts

Each day, around 20 persons join this events and kibitz their thoughts via PAM-bot. So Join us and have fun!
In case of tiebreak, the system is very simple, it is the registration order which decides, so, be there a the very beginning!

icon  WCL : The Community

We need you ! As already said above, WCL is growing ! We need Helpers, we need more Tournament managers, so if you like chess and if you enjoy to help people to play chess and give them fun in playing in the best conditions, apply for Helper and/or for Tournament Manager. Go in Event Tab of the Activities Window and, at the bottom, you'll find the forms to fill. Don't forget that thing : if you are friendly with people, people will be friendly with you (well... almost !)
You can also click on "I want to become a Helper" or on "I want to be a Tournament Manager"

Feel free to share your opinion and your wishes. We want to know what kind of event you like, in tourneys, in event vs titled players. We also need to know what is the best hour for you (of course, regarding where you live in the world) and how much time you can spend on WCL for an event. You can find the list of scheduled events, tourneys and broadcast of the coming week in the event window .
Well, we need to know who you are and where you are from in order to schedule the right events at the right time.

Questions and some answers:

  • Wild : Atomic chess will is back with the release 1.2.0 of Dasher actually under testing. Coming with it an other wild is back : the Two Kings. To know more about the rules of those two popular wild, type "help wild". Ask your Tournament Manager in channel 221 to set up Atomic or any other wild tourney!

  • Tournament with Prizes : WCL is holding prizes tournaments. Some of them are announced in the newsletter but not all. So the better way to check when they are is to connect on the site and, in events Window (windows-activities-events) and click on the list of the scheduled tournament which is updated.

  • Problembot : is actually unavailable. Hope it will be fixed soon. Meanwhile, you can practice with Traininbot.

  • Mr Spock : And he didn't speak for a while. I agree it's annoying but the problem has been reported and should be soon fixed.

  • Guests : You have dowloaded Dasher and you can actually plays vs the computer when you are not connected but, if you want to play on line, you must be a member. Log in as a guest just allows you to ask questions. In case of problem to validate your membership, password lost, please contact .

  • Games of the day / Videos : they are available for members only (so join us !) with your WCL and password handle.

  • Mac / Linux :I adore the dasher program but I can't downloaded with my Mac OS X 10.5.1 and sadly I only play with it in my laptop. There is an alternative interface to Dasher for people who chosed Mac or Linux, its called Sonia.

  • Time Control : Set up a game with time control like 40 moves in 60 minutes + extra time like on an OTB is possible when the game is in tourney mode, so you may need a Admin Tournament Manager to do it.

  • What time is it ? : On WCL, the events refers to the Server Time EST (New-York time), that is GMT-5 or PST+3. To check the Server Time (and see if your didn't forget to have lunch) you can type /Date in main tab and see the server time.
Two important addresses : If you have any suggestions, ideas or questions, feel free to contact us. We will give you a personal answer or publish it in this part if many of you are concerned by a topic. We collect also infos regarding members of WCL. If you have played a tourney OTB, if your club organizes an event or anything else, we can mention it.
Some of you may have questions relatives to login, lost password, membership then contact support. We answer as soon we receive your mail.
