World Chess Cup 2007

The World Chess Cupis taking place Nov 24 to Dec 17 in Khanty-Mansiysk. Khanty-Mansiysk is, by all accounts, a pleasant little Russian resort with a population of around 60,000 belonging to the autonomous region of Okrug. Not a large metropolis perhaps, but the small town is no stranger to top-flight chess events: The 2007 Fide World Cup is now underway there, it was the home of the 2005 Fide World Cup, and it will be the venue for the 2010 Chess Olympiad.
One hundred and twenty eight players from around the world assembled there for the Fide World Cup; a knockout event composed of players who qualified by virtue of regional competitions such as the European, Asian and Pan American Championships or by rating. The $1.6 million prize fund includes $120,000 for the winner and the added attraction of the right to a world title final eliminator against Veselin Topalov; the winner of that match then going on to meet the winner of the Anand-Kramnik match.
And at the end of the first week of play that now sees the field whittled down to the final 32, there's been some notable high-profile casualties along the way, such as former world championship challenger Nigel Short, and most notable of all, one of the pre-tournament favorites, No.3 seed Temiour Radjabov.
ICC will have live, daily coverage starting at 5am ICC time - 11am CET - 3pm local time. Visit ICC or the official web site.

From the official league website:
The Dallas Destiny win the USCL Championship! In an epic match that went until 2:15 AM, the Dallas Destiny's IM Drasko Boskovic came through after a endgame blunder by GM Larry Christiansen to clinch the tiebreak and give Dallas the USCL title. While the 2006 Championship Match was exciting, this year's match may have even topped it. First it seemed as if Dallas had the clear upper hand in regulation, however things started suddenly shifting Boston's way. After Boston's SM Jorge Sammour-Hasbun defeated IM Davorin Kuljasevic, Boston was ahead 2-1 and all they needed was a draw by NM Chris Williams and the title would be theirs.
Unfortunately for Boston, WFM Bayaraa Zorigt outplayed Williams in the ensuing time scramble and the match was headed to tiebreak. It was an action packed tiebreaker, with lots of ups and downs.
Eventually it got down to the top boards for both teams, as GM Christiansen fought his way down to Dallas's last player. However he couldn't crack IM Boskovic's Accelerated Dragon, and ended up losing a pawn after playing too ambitiously in the endgame.
Congratulations to Dallas on their fantastic season, after two seasons of unfulfilled promise, they have shocked the world and become USCL Champions. Also congratulations to Boston, as while they lost the match on paper, they played tremendously all season long and it could have gone to either team with a break or two.

Tourney Tip of the Week:
Request Guidelines:
Channel 221 is always available for your tournament requests. However, please follow a few simple guidelines when requesting a tourney:
- Do include all the information the manager needs to know, such as wild type, time control, style, etc.
- Do ask politely.
- Don't request an "under" tourney unless you're 200 rating points below the request (example: don't request an under 1600 unless your rating is 1400 or below).
- Don't spam the channel with lots of requests for the same tourney… it doesn't help your cause!
We run lots of tourneys and we always love your input: Just remember these simple guidelines and you'll enjoy many of your favorite tournaments here on ICC!
