Anand Wins !
ICC would like to offer their congratulations to India's Vishy Anand, who today in Mexico City became the undisputed World Champion! The 37-year-old Indian ace led from start to finish with an undefeated score of 9/14 to capture the title
he so coveted to go along with his new status in the rankings as world #1.
Anand proved to be in a different league to his rivals throughout, and his only time of danger was salvaging draws in two difficult rook ending a pawn down to Russians Vladimir Kramnik and Alexander
Grischuk. Apart from the title and
top prize of $390,000, Anand now has a lucrative rematch lined-up next year (12-game match to played between May and September 2008 - precise date and venue to be confirmed by FIDE) against former champion Kramnik.
Kudos also to surprise package Boris Gelfand, as the Israeli #1 had the best result of his career at age 39 to tie for second place with Kramnik on 8/14.
