Age and guile once again takes on youth and innocence at the 2nd NH
Chess Tournament in Amsterdam, as a newer generation of players do
battle with a team of stars from yesteryear.
The ten-day Scheveningen team tournament, held in the Dutch capital
is an intriguing battle of the ages between a team of `Experience´
and a team of `Rising Stars´. The old hands are players who all
peaked in the 1980s.

Last year, the Rising Stars were emphatic 28-22 victors. This year
however, the old hands are proving more of a challenge. Going into
the final round, the Rising Stars lead by just a single point in the
team competition, 15.5-14.5.
Leading the charge for the coveted invitation to play in next year's Melody Amber tournament in Monaco though is the young, Ukrainian ace, Sergey Karjakin (pictured above), who leads the overall competition on 6/9, a half point ahead of Ivan Cheparinov and Artur Jussupow

There's an old saying in the printed media that a picture says more
than a thousand words. If that were true in the chess world, then
ace Dutch photographer Fred Lucas has written what must seem like the
Collected Works of William Shakespeare!
There's none more professional amongst the camera-wielding rugby
scrum of photographers than Fred Lucas, armed with his trusty camera
and collection of lens' as he sets about getting candid and unusual
photos of all the players in action as you have never seen before.
"My relation with chess is simple," says Fred. "I'm a photographer
who is very fond of the game, loves the atmosphere at tournaments –
it's if you can really feel all the ideas coming up on all those
boards – and I love to make pictures, especially with available
light. What I like most when photographing chess players is to get
their emotions that are otherwise hard to see, because life
immediately proceeds to the next moment. Before the start of a game
most players are busy with themselves, concentrating and some give
you the impression that they really don't want to pay attention to
anything else than the game to come."
If you haven't heard or seen the work of this maestro, then please
take the time to visit Fred Lucas' site and enjoy
the works of a true artist.

Tourney Tip of the Week:
Watch those dr-points! If you accumulate 50, you'll be banned from tournaments for a week, and that's no fun!
You gain dr-points when you are forfeited from tourneys, so avoid behaviors such as latestarting, disconnecting before a tourney is finished, and getting frustrated and leaving the tourney on your own.
To check your dr-points, "tell tomato finger". You can reduce your dr-points by completing tourneys. It's more fun for everyone if you play more tourneys and stay until the end!
"Tell tomato help dr-pts" for more details.
Atomic Championship Recap! It was a year of near misses for Peter-Patzer, widely considered to be one of the better atomic (wild 27) players on the ICC. He finished as the runner-up in both the 1 0 section and the 3 0 section!
In the 1 0, he lost to this year's champion, MoltenThinker, who has also been the wild 27 champion in 2004, 2005, and 2006! Nice job on the 4-peat Molten!
This year was the first year of the 3 0 w27 championship section, and Tipau becomes the first champion!
Congratulations to all who qualified for the finals. It was a good show, and we look forward to next year! |
