Aronian
defeats Kramnik 4-2 in a rapid match
Yerevan, Armenia, 4th-6th May.
LATE
last year, overjoyed with Levon Aronian leading his country
to gold at the 37th Chess Olympiad, the Armenian Treasury issued a new coin
minted with all the players' names on it.
In a final warm-up match before playing Magnus Carlsen later this month
in the Candiates cycle, Aronian took on Vladimir Kramnik in a six-game
Rapid match last weekend in the capital city, Yerevan.
Opening the match, Armenian Prime Minister Serge Sargsyan said:
"Armenia has a true passion for chess - it is the land of Tigran
Petrosian and Olympic Champions. Chess is part and parcel of Armenia's
daily life, and it is hard to find a household in Armenia where this venerated
game is not played. Indeed, we glorify our beloved famous grandmasters,
likewise holding the legendary greats from around the world in the highest
regard and extending to them our sincere hospitality."
Well, chess-mad Armenia had more to celebrate as Aronian won by what
on paper looked a resounding 4-2 victory over the world champion - but
the scoreline only told part of the story, because in the final two games,
Kramnik uncharacteristically missed mates in both!
The
third M-Tel Masters, 9-20 May
ICC is the official Internet Partner
Six of the strongest GM’s in the world are competing for
the M-Tel Masters 2007 title, which started on Thursday
in Sofia, Bulgaria. There was a shock in store in the opening
round for local hero and top-seed Veselin Topalov, as the world #2 fell
for a nasty tactic to Livu-Dieter Nisipeanu to lose his first round game.
In the only other decisive result of round 1, former elite star Gata Kamsky
found the going tough against rising star Shakriyar Mamedyarov, as the Azeri
#2 also won.
What makes this event so unique, is that the rules
prohibits conventional draw offers in the pursuit of fighting chess! ICC
will be the official Internet partners for the M-Tel Masters, and we'll
be bringing you extensive coverage that will include video and live commentary
on ICC Chess.FM.

Scheduled Fischer Random!
Every
Tuesday evening at 18:00 server time, a 5 round swiss 4 2 blitz
Fischer Random (w22) tourney is held in Wildone! Every game
begins with the correct number of pieces, but your back row is
arranged in a totally random order from game to game. It’s
the ultimate test of chess strategy without memorized openings! Come
out this Tuesday and give it a try… you won’t be sorry!
Tourney Tip of the Week: Leaving a tourney!
Every
now and then, it’s unavoidable that a player needs to leave a tourney
they’ve entered.
While we encourage players
to remain if at all possible, if you must leave you can do
so with the command “tell <bot> leave. For
example, if you were playing in the Scheduled Fischer Random
on a Tuesday evening and absolutely had to go, you could type “tell
Wildone leave”. You
will then be removed from the tourney.
Please don’t simply
disconnect, because then the manager is left wondering whether
you will return or whether they
should forfeit you. The proper etiquette is to simply use the “tell <bot> leave” command. *Be
Warned* -- you will receive dr points!
