Premove in BlitzIn 2.5
As you may have noticed, very fast games are quite popular on the Internet Chess
Club. To enhance the fun of playing these games, we have Premove. With
this feature turned on, you are able to make a move while it's your opponent's
turn. This is called a premove. If it turns out (because of the opponent's move)
that the premove is illegal, then you have to make another move.
To put this in context, premoves are a streamlining of the standard "hovering"
technique, available in all previous versions of BlitzIn. With hovering you move
a piece during the opponent's turn without releasing the mouse button. When the
opponent's move appears, you instantly release the mouse button, completing your
move.
Premove is turned on by default in BlitzIn 2.5. You can change the
setting by going to Options/Move Input
and selecting Premove.
To make a premove, you simply move during the opponent's turn. When
your opponent's move is received by BlitzIn, your premove is
automatically made. Prior to that you can cancel your premove by
right-clicking on the board. Alternatively, you can cancel by
slightly lifting the piece you premoved and dropping it back on the
same square it came from. You can also replace your premove with
another premove.
The image above is the result of white moving 1. e4, then
premoving to d4 before Black's first move. Regardless of what move Black
makes, d4 will be carried out (it can't be an illegal move).
White could cancel the premove by slightly moving the pawn on d2,
or by just making another premove.
You have the option of choosing to have premoves shown by arrows (as
above) or by highlighting the square (see the last picture below).
The following picture shows how to make this adjustment.
To use highlighting, just deselect "Arrow for Premove". The default
color is blue for a premove highlight and red for a regular move
highlight. You can set both of these colors, as well as the color of
the premove arrow in Options/Colors. (Crazyhouse premove drops are
always shown via the highlighting even when arrows are selected.)
The picture below shows what the d4 premove looks like if square highlighting
is used.
