"Recommendation [for the ICC]: Excellent! Best service for your money. Suitable for beginners to Grandmasters." — Grandmaster Roland Schmaltz, The Complete Chess Server Guide (2004)
"How do top players see things so quickly?
John Donaldson: It's funny but a player of 1800 or 1900 may actually
calculate more variations in a game than a strong master who knows what
to look at and what to reject. An IM or GM knows the basic plans and
what should happen. At times they don't look more than a move ahead as
calculation would just be a waste of time.
Larry Evans: Practically all GMS have the ability to size up a position
quickly. You can't just develop that. Certain things can be developed
only up to a point. Judgment is the main difference between a GM and a
strong master. This included a quick eye and feeling. One well known
definition on the difference between a GM and a strong master is that
the master will labor, think, squeeze and finally find the best square
for the Knight after so many minutes. The GM takes the knight, tosses
it in the air and it lands on the best square!
Yasser Seirawan: I only see things quickly if I have seen the position
before. I can combine similar ideas from past experiences to relate to
the present situation.
Miguel Quinteros: GMs can cut through many bad variations at a glance.
That's experience. That is chess. They have a very good memory of the
games played and this enables them to find the best move very rapidly."
