I ponder a mystery carved in wood. As the long nights become the long days,
I carefully wander the branching maze, Yet stand again where before I stood.
It is not I, but the maze, which moves: I only partly deflect its course.
I have an opponent, also the source Of its evolution: still, neither proves
that he has control, until the end. Then perhaps one or other could claim
Mastery enough to be able to bend the board to his will; but he never came
Close to the mastery needed to wend All of the paths of this mystery, this game.
