1: Hi !! name is Jim 19 yrs old from cumberland MD Im a postal expert
USCF (2059).
2: Im currently competing in the Maryland Postal Chess Championship....with
current state champion John Mingos, others include Mark Lazalere, and
Ted Brandhorst
3: Ok on openings : Ideas Behind the Chess Openings ( Rueben Fine) is a
must. ECO , MCO , BCO , take a backseat to the new Russian volumes EMCO
(numerous authors). ---> Try to get comprehensive books on defenses you
play as black !!
4: ok on middlegame : The Art of the Middlegame is an inexpensive must read
written by Keres & Kotov. Think Like A GM ( A. Kotov) to learn to calculate
variations. The Middlegame volumes 1&2 by (Euwe & Kramer) need to be
studied . Then, move on to Reassesing Your Chess with (Jeremy Silman)
5: Learn to plan , select candidate moves, etc with Silman's large work. And
finally learn to play positional chess with Aron Nimzovitch in My System and
Chess Praxis
6: Tactics : Learn the themes and definitions exampled with many diagrammed
positions in Lev Alburt & Sam Palatnik's Chess Tactics for the Tournament
Player. Then put them in Use with the Anthology of Chess Combo's by Chess
Informant.
7: when you are ready to test your "stuff" try Combinations : The Heart of
Chess by (Chernev), and Secrets of Chess Tactics (Dvoretsky) recommended
for 1800+ players.
8: Strategy : Well start off with the hypermodern (Ludek Pachman) Modern
Chess Strategy, 2 or 3 volumes i forget. :-) then try (edward Lasker's )
modern chess stratey to refresh yourself. And when you are ready to move on
to modernized stuff : The Art of Defense by Soltis, Mastering
9: mastering the endgame vol 1.2 by Shereshevsky, Pawn structure chess by
Soltis, Pawn power in chess by Kmoch, and Allbut's Chess Strategy
