NEWS 1496 (25-Mar-01)  Disk system fixed! Back to the real database.
Due to a hardware fault in our machine's RAID controller, we were unable to
operate with the full player and game database from March 21 until early
this morning (March 25), when we were finally able to fix that hardware
problem. Instead, we were operating with a partial database put together
from backups. We are now once again operating with the full database.
Because of inaccuracies and inconsistencies with the ratings and game histories
in the partial database, and because we had told many users that games played
during that period would not count, we have decided to discard those games and
rating changes, rather than to attempt to merge them with the full database.
If you need to access those games, you can connect to a temporary server running
on port 5555, but only for the next few days.
We sincerely apologize for the disruption in our service, and appreciate your
patience. We are extending all unexpired accounts by seven days, as a gesture
of thanks and to compensate for our system's down time this year.
