Morelia-Linares 2007 - Round 5

Morelia-Linares 2007 February, 17-25 [Friday is FREE DAY]   The Morelia - Linares tournament takes place 16th Feb - 11th March 2007. The Morelia half takes place 17th-25th February and Linares 2nd-10th March. The GMs participants are: Topalov, Anand, Leko, Svidler, Aronian, Ivanchuk , Morozevich and Carlsen.

Summary of the round-5 by John B. Henderson

THE Morelia/Linares super-tournament in Mexico was blown wide-open again in round five, as a newer generation of stars humbled the top two players in the world.

Overnight leader Vishy Anand's reign at the top proved to be short-lived, as the world No.2 was beaten on like a piñata by last year's surprise winner, Levon Aronian of Armenia, who now with an unbeaten +1 score moves into joint second alongside Anand.

The biggest shock of the second major of the year though, came with the stunning conclusion to the Carlsen-Topalov encounter that left the Norwegian teen as the unlikely sole leader on +2.

Veselin Topalov had defended accurately in a long struggle to reach the diagram position. The world No.1 only has one way to lose here and that is to resign - and he shocked the pressroom audience in Morelia by doing just that! After thinking for about 5 minutes, Topalov resigned, and just shook his head in disgust when Magnus  Carlsen showed him the defence of 64 ...Qd5+ and e5 covering the g8 square.
