Express report of the Round 13
by John B. Henderson
Indian ace Vishy Anand continues to hold the lead
heading for the finish line today in Linares - all of which could make for a tense final round, with young turk Magnus Carlsen still just a half point behind.
Both leaders took the safety-first option in the penultimate round, with Anand easily drawing with Peter Leko, and Carlsen likewise against Peter Svidler. You would hope
it would all lead to a dramatic climax to the tournament, with both Anand and Carlsen going all-out for a final round victory? But the reality of the situation is that - with both having the black pieces - I'm betting on
two relatively tame draws here: Anand to take the title and also become the new world No.1, and Carlsen to secure second place with a superlative breakthrough performance for the Norwegian teenager that will move him to within
striking distance of the top ten.
The other games in round 13 though where the ones to go for all the action. Levon Aronian employed an adventurous gambit in the g3 Queen's Indian, made famous by Lev Polugayevsky, and looked to
be getting the better of the piece-play against Vassily Ivanchuk. But alas the pyrotechnics soon fizzled out to a draw after some accurate defending by Ivanchuk, and whatever endgame advantage Aronian had
proved to be miniscule and the game was soon drawn.
Highlight of the round had to be the grudge match between Alexander Morozevich and Veselin Topalov, with no love lost between these two bitter rivals in yet another marathon encounter. After steering his
way through the complexities of the knight ending, Topalov almost immediately the resulting queen and pawn ending that required pinpoint accuracy, as pointed out by all those tablebase mavens on the ICC, with 70... Qh1+ 71. Kg7 Qg2!
72. Qxe5 Qf3 safeguarding the draw. Linares is proving to be nothing short of an all-out nightmare for Topalov, who now moves to -2.
