Express report of the Round 12
by John B. Henderson
The Linares super-tournament is heading for a tense
finish on Saturday, with veteran Vishy Anand looking to hold off the spirited challenge from Norwegian teenager Magnus Carlsen to take his second Linares title.
In round 12, both Anand and Carlsen, respectively, had easy draws against last year's winner Levon Aronian and world No.1 Veselin Topalov to stay clear of the chasing
pack, with the Indian ace retaining his half point lead at the top going into the penultimate round on Friday.
But if Anand can hold on to his lead, it could well be double joy for the Indian ace, as Linares looks set to make a dramatic impact on the FIDE rating list to be published next month. In Anand's long and distinguished
career, he has always been the bridesmaid in the contest for the world No.1 spot - first to Garry Kasparov, followed by Veselin Topalov.
But Anand has gained 13 Elo points from Linares -- and Topalov set to lose perhaps more than that - so will become the new world No.1, with the Bulgarian perhaps slipping to No.3 behind Vladimir
Kramnik. For world No.24 Carlsen, the tournament has proved to be major a breakthrough for the talented teen. Not only is Carlsen set now to enter the '2700 club' for the first time, but along with Teimour
Radjabov, he's part of a new generation of young turks that's poised to make their way into the elite top ten.
Remarkably though, heading in the opposite direction and out of the top ten could well be world. No.6 Peter Leko, who has had a simply torrid time in both the Mexican and now Spanish leg of the tournament. A third defeat
has uncharacteristically condemned the Hungarian to the cellar in Linares, as Alexander Morozevich put Vassily Ivanchuk's Scotch firmly on the rocks with an easy victory in the only other decisive game of the round.

We’re quite happy to be able to present a new video at Chessvibes.com from
Linares by Macauley Peterson (Macauley). He filmed the post mortem of one of the best games of the tournament so far: Morozevich-Leko from
round nine, played last Saturday. |
And he added a new feature: a few times you will see an animated chess set, to clarify a few of the positions the two GMs are talking about. GMs in order of appearance: Alexander Morozevich, Peter
Leko, Arshak Petrosian, and Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Have fun!

Videos from Morelia at Chessvibes

Chessvibes.com
The Chessvibes team presents some fragments
of the second round. Vassily Ivanchuk and Peter Leko seem to be the biggest wanderers. Especially Leko is quite interested in other positions. Also, the post-mortem games Anand-Svidler and Leko-Morozevich. |
