Express report of the Round 10
by John B. Henderson
The legend that is Linares, Spain, has to be one of the most unlikely
locations of the strongest series of prestigious super-tournaments ever held.
From a nothing event in 1978 in a nothing town, local grocery maganet Luis Rentero, the tournament's founding father, built the tournament into what it is today, and in the process put the little Spanish town firmly on the media map by
inviting some of the world's greatest players there to participate.
Last year, in a big shake up for the event, the first half was held in Morelia, Mexico, with the second half in Linares. And this year it was no different, with the second leg of the elite double round-robin underway again in its spiritual
home of the Hotel Anibal in Linares.

As the players and their entourage moved from Mexico to Spain, there was a an unlikely clash of the generations at the end of the first leg, with seasoned veteran Vishy Anand tied at the top in first place on +2 alongside 16-year-old Norwegian
wunderkind Magnus Carlsen.
Following two rounds of mainly draws, the leaders clashed again in round ten, and just like the Morelia leg, youth and innocence proved no match for age and guile, as Anand ominously moved a full point clear at the top on 6.5/10 after
a crushing victory over the Norwegian teen.

We’re quite happy to be able to present a new video at Chessvibes.com from
Linares by Macauley Peterson (Macauley). He filmed the post mortem of one of the best games of the tournament so far: Morozevich-Leko from
round nine, played last Saturday. |
And he added a new feature: a few times you will see an animated chess set, to clarify a few of the positions the two GMs are talking about. GMs in order of appearance: Alexander Morozevich, Peter
Leko, Arshak Petrosian, and Rustam Kasimdzhanov. Have fun!
