Today is Grandmaster Alexander Vladimirovich Ivanov's birthday. He was born in Omsk, Russia, on May 1, 1956.
Ivanov moved to the United States in 1988 and was awarded the GM title by FIDE in 1991. Alexander lives in Massachusetts with his wife, Esther Epstein, a notable chess player who holds the title of Woman International Master.
Ivanov boasts a rich history in competitive chess, having participated in four FIDE World Championships (1999, 2000, 2002, and 2004) and four FIDE World Cups (2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011). His early chess career saw him representing the Soviet team twice in the World U26 Team Championship, where he clinched the team Silver medal in 1978 and secured an individual Gold and team Gold in 1980. Later on, Ivanov switched federation and played for the US team in the 2002 Chess Olympiad.
Not one to underestimate, Ivanov has showcased his skills even recently. In a USCF tournament in early 2021, despite being late and missing the first round, he managed to tie for third place alongside grandmaster Gadir Guseinov.
